Strange Horizons

17/10/2011 at 10:13 pm (Uncategorized)

I’m excited to announce that a new story of mine, “The Keats Variation,” will be appearing in Strange Horizons next spring.

In other news: I’ve been spending my time amassing a collection of recent opera DVDs. For some reason I had not ever got into opera DVDs, though I love opera and am possessed of many opinions about it. Now that defect has been remedied. Now I question how I lived without opera DVDs. The truth is that there are many terrible ones. (I would pay through my teeth for a recording of Simon Keenlyside as Don Giovanni that is not in some way deficient.) But there are also many transcendent ones, and they offer an entirely different perspective to sound recordings.

Lest you fear that my life is not exciting, I also continue to progress in Anglo-Saxon. Why history has largely forgotten the exploits of Aelfric the Alderman is beyond me.

Not One of Us #46

29/09/2011 at 8:12 pm (Uncategorized)

Hark! Not One of Us #46 is now available (see here for more info). “The House of Rejoicing,” the story of mine it contains, is perhaps one of my strangest pieces. Yet I like it very much for all that.

Coming up: “Seven Spells to Sever the Heart” will be appearing in Fantasy Magazine in November, and “The Bird Country” will be in Shimmer in the spring.

In other news: I am learning Anglo-Saxon. I am enjoying Witch Doctor very much. I am saddened by the end of the first season of SyFy’s Alphas, which is not really what one would describe as “good TV,” but which is eminently lovable in spite of this fault. I am aware of the constant, ambient presence of flocks of Canada geese.

Shimmer #15

16/09/2011 at 11:05 am (Uncategorized)

My story “The Bird Country” will be appearing in Shimmer #15 next year. This is one of the older stories I’ve written, but one of my favorites, so I’m particularly pleased that the people at Shimmer— who, my work aside, have really nuanced and excellent taste– have picked it.

In other news, I’ve recently moved to Columbus, Ohio, to start graduate work here. I was very pleased to find a good comic book store right off, then less pleased to catch up on my stories and find out that the new Avengers: The Children’s Crusade has been pushed back to Sept. 21st. Upside-down smiley face x 2! I consoled myself with X-Factor. It is always thus.

It looks like my story in Fantasy Magazine will be coming up soon, complete with an author spotlight in which I discuss the subject I am always discussing, to the despair of everyone around me, namely: the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. Hurrah!

LCRW #27

13/08/2011 at 3:30 am (Uncategorized)

Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet No. 27 is now available from Small Beer Press. “Thou Earth, Thou,” the story of mine that appears in it, was my very first magazine sale, back in autumn 2009. I’m very excited to see it appear, especially in a magazine that I esteem so highly. If you’re not familiar with LCRW, check it out: it’s a teeny zine that publishes exceptionally lively and artful speculative fiction. (I’m not just saying that because they bought my story!)
